Alice. Alice the cat was picked up as a stray in Espanola. What were initially believed to be injuries from the cat trap, turned out to be cancerous lesions on her ears. Alice is about 5 years old, and now that the melanoma has been removed, she should be able to live a full life. To keep her healthy, Alice must be an indoor only cat, as excessive exposure to sunlight will cause her condition to return.

Barkin' Boutique Moves Location, Expands

Proceeds from New, Larger Line of High-Quality Merchandise to
Serve as Important Revenue Source for Española Valley Humane Society

Store-wide 20 Percent Discount from May 7 Grand Opening to May 14

SANTA FE — The Española Valley Humane Society today announced the move and expansion of its Barkin' Boutique, a high-end resale store that has sold fashionable clothing, jewelry, accessories and other merchandise to Santa Fe-area customers since 2000 from its location on 1107 Pen Road. The expanded store will now operate out of 510 North Guadalupe Street next to Jinja in the DeVargas Center complex.

With its grand opening on Saturday, May 7, the new store will have three times the space, allowing for new merchandise, including an expanded Designer section, a new Vintage area, twice as much jewelry, retail items by local artists, and furniture, antiques and home décor items. Grand opening events will begin the afternoon of May 7 – the day before Mother's Day – and will include a raffle for high-end items (gift certificates, designer goods and art), music by Nacha Mendez (voted the best female vocalist in 2009 and 2010 by the Santa Fe Reporter), refreshments, and Tarot card/palm readings.

The new Barkin' Boutique will also include a permanent cat adoption area, and all store proceeds benefit the Española Valley Humane Society (EVHS). EVHS operates the only animal shelter and low-cost veterinary clinic in Rio Arriba County yet only receives 11 percent of its revenue from county and city sources. In order for the nonprofit to raise the additional $800,000 needed each year, EVHS relies on the generosity of the Española and Santa Fe communities, including the Barkin' Boutique's customers and business partners.

"The Barkin' Boutique has been a fixture in Santa Fe and trusted source of great clothes and merchandise," said Bridget Lindquist, executive director of EVHS. "The store has also been an invaluable source of revenue for a nonprofit that very much needs support in its mission to rescue, treat and find homes for area cats and dogs. We truly appreciate all the customers and businesses that help to make the Barkin' Boutique a great store – and help animals in need in the process."

EVHS – which takes in any dog or cat, regardless of health, age, breed or temperament – took in 4,073 animals in 2010 and performed nearly 3,000 spay/neuter procedures for free or at a lowered cost to reduce future problems of unwanted kittens and puppies. For every $100 of revenue from the Barkin' Boutique, EVHS can spay/neuter, vaccinate and find a home for a cat or dog.

The store hours will be Tuesday through Sunday, 10am to  6pm and closed Mondays.
