About Drum Corps

Bluecoats trumpets

Without experiencing modern competitive drum and bugle corps in person, it is hard to understand exactly what you will experience at Drums Along The Sandias. Imagine six of the most elite groups of their kind performing 10+ minute productions combining music, dance, and drill with the highest level of precision, athleticism, artistry, and power.

Far beyond a high school or college marching band, Drum Corps International is the pinnacle for marching musicians across the world. The best young brass and percussion performers from all over the globe join with colorguards of the highest quality to embark on a grueling national tour with hopes of being crowned the DCI World Champions in August.

For those performers talented and committed enough to participate, drum corps becomes a way of life and a fondly remembered part of their youth. Between the thrill of entertaining enormous crowds, touring the country (and sometimes the world), the creation of life-long friendships, and the motivation to perfect an intensely challenging show, it is easy to see why passion runs so deep for both the corps and the fans who love and support the activity.

About the
Tour

Blue Devils drumline

Starting in the autumn prior to the season, drum corps from around the continent begin auditioning prospective members. Over the next several months, the personnel of the corps is shaped and molded during return auditions. In the winter and early spring, the corps begin learning their production while honing their skills. Once Memorial Day arrives, most corps have started 12 hour daily rehearsals to develop the show and prepare for to tour. After 2-3 weeks of 'all-days,' the corps depart for a grueling 2½ month tour featuring about 30-40 performances in about 20 states. Performers sleep on buses and gym floors as they trek from city to city, and a crew of volunteers operate large, rolling kitchens out of semi truck trailers to feed the caravans.

The tours culminate with the DCI World Championships, held this year in Indianapolis, Indiana. As dozens of drum corps converge on the World Championships, the Division I ensembles engage in a series of three competitions to establish their final ranking. The top twelve scoring groups in the Semifinals qualify for the Finals, which is the most elite stage in marching music.
